Differences between Adderall IR vs. XR

Differences between Adderall IR vs. XR

Adderall is a combination drug that contains amphetamine and dextroamphetamine, the central nervous system stimulants that affect chemicals in the brain and nerves contributing to hyperactivity and impulse control. Used to treat narcolepsy and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), the drug works by changing the amounts of certain natural substances in the brain.

According to the National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH), an estimated 6.4 percent of college students between the ages of 18 and 22 have used Adderall for recreational purposes.

The drug is one of the most readily available and highly addictive drugs in the market. Its abuse can result in physical and psychological damage that can be difficult to recover from.

The drug is available in two formats that include Adderall IR (immediate release) and XR (extended release). Although both these formats are used to treat ADHD and contain the same active ingredient of 75 percent dextroamphetamine and 25 percent levoamphetamine, there are certain differences that affect users of the drug.

Following are some differences between the two formulas:

1. Format

Adderall IR is manufactured and available in tablet format while Adderall XR is manufactured in the form of capsules that contains tiny beads of which 50 percent are immediate-release (just like the IR) and the rest are delayed.

2. Effects

The effect of Adderall IR lasts approximately 4 to 6 hours depending upon a person’s body chemistry.

The effects of Adderall XR last up to 12 hours and help people experience a reduction in  symptoms for a longer duration

3. Abuse potential

While abusing any of the two formats can lead to effects such as high dopamine levels that might trigger stimulant psychosis, abusing the IR version is more common and easier as it is available in tablet form.

Crushing and snorting Adderall IR is relatively easy as compared to crushing the beads used in the capsule format of Adderall XR

4. Available dosage

Both forms of Adderall are available in varying dosages to be used as prescribed. While Adderall IR is available in seven different dosages including 5 mg, 7.5 mg, 10 mg, 12.5 mg, 15 mg, 20 mg and 30 mg, the dosage available for Adderall XR are six including 5 mg, 10 mg, 15 mg, 20 mg, 25 mg and 30 mg.

5. Medicinal uses

An individual’s preference for one drug over another varies. While both formats effectively treat ADHD and narcolepsy, individuals who have to spend long hours at school or at work might prefer to opt for the XR version as its effect remains for approximately 12 hours. On the other hand, individuals who need to focus for 4 to 6 hours might prefer to take IR version so that they feel better and less affected for the rest of the day.

Road to recovery

There are certain aspects in which the two are similar such as the effect on a patient, composition, medicinal uses and side effects. Consulting a doctor is always recommended.
